Comments on the document are to be sent to the the chair of the NERIS R&D Committee, Johan Camps (johan.camps@sckcen.be) and to the NERIS Secretariat (sec@eu-neris.net) at latest on 11th October 2019.

Comments will be compiled and adressed at next R&D Committee meeting, taking place on 17th and 18th October 2019 at the occasion of the 4th European Radiation Protection Week in Stockholm, Sweden. Then, the new version SRA will be updated, finalised and shared to the community.

The training course on “Assessment of long-term radiological risks from environmental releases: modelling and measurements”, 20 April – 1 May 2020, Roskilde, Denmark is organised by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in cooperation with PDC-ARGOS. The training course is co-funded by the European Joint Programme for the Integration of Radiation Protection Research CONCERT.

The course is aimed at providing the participants with an understanding of how to assess by measurements and modelling the long-term radiological risks from releases to the environment of radionuclides. Nuclear power plant accidents will particularly be in focus, but RDD’s will be considered.

The course builds on decades of international research work, e.g., in European projects such as ECP-4, STRATEGY, EURANOS, NERIS TP and PREPARE, including unique experience from extensive practical investigations in contaminated areas and laboratory assessments. It comprises a hands-on introduction to laboratory measurement techniques including state-of-the-art radiochemistry methods for determination of radionuclides that can not easily be determined. It also includes a hands-on decision support modelling session using a state-of-the-art computerised decision support system for nuclear and radiological emergency management.

The course will provide insight into:

• Assessment of long-term radiological risks from releases to the environment
• Theoretical principles of dosimetry
• Implications of different contamination scenario types
• Migration of radioactive contaminants in different types of environment
• Modelling internal dose and specific factors influencing ingestion dose
• Modelling external dose in contaminated inhabited areas
• Decision support systems for accident management
• Important concepts in sampling and gamma spectrometry
• Radiochemical analysis for radionuclides that are difficult to measure
• Rapid radiochemistry techniques for multiple samples

Registration: Deadline on 15th of January 2020. Limited to 12 participants

The targeted audience is PhD students and young scientists / advisors. The course will give students 2.5 ECTS points.

There is no registration fee for persons with affiliation to a European organisation. Participants are expected to cover their own travel and subsistence costs (e.g., meals, hotel, visa if needed)

The CONFIDENCE Dissemination workshop “Coping with uncertainties for improved modelling and decision making in nuclear emergencies”, organized by VUJE AS, was held at Lindner Hotel, Bratislava, Slovak Republic in December, 02-05, 2019. About 90 scientists and decision makers attended the workshop.

The dissemination workshop allowed to present the results of the CONFIDENCE project, demonstrated the applicability of the developed methods and tools in interactive discussion sessions and collected feedback from the participants and end users on the work performed.

Aims and objectives of the workshops

Innovations in instrumentation, computing and information technology have provided numerous tools for improving our day-to-day lives. In the same way, new and innovative approaches to radiation protection (RP) could also be developed, in particular in the ALARA process. However, as with most new technologies, issues and challenges need to be identified and tackled. The PODIUM Project and the European ALARA Network have come together to organize a joint workshop to present PODIUM results, innovative ALARA tools and discuss broadly their use in advancing RP and ALARA.

We are pleased to announce that the pre-registration to the TERRITORIES  Final Event (12-14 Nov 2019, Aix en provence) is open.

The final event, open to TERRITORIES scientists and to stakeholders, aims to:

• Collect feedback on two deliverables from the project, including one about existing exposure situations due to nuclear accident contamination

Process-based models have existed for nearly two decades, but are still rarely used in emergency planning. This workshop will bring together modellers, scientists and importantly end-users to discuss advances in foodchain transfer with an emphasis on process-based soil-plant transfer models. One aim of the workshop will be to investigate the potential adoption of process-based models by end-users and also identify future research priorities for human foodchain modelling. »

The workshop will start at lunchtime on the 9th and finish at 17:00 on the 10th September.
